GARLAND, Texas — A 17-year-old youth has died following a shooting that erupted between two groups of Myanmar youths at Watson Park in Garland on August 23, 2026.
The victim has been identified as Tonyvan Mang, 17, of Wylie, Texas. A 20-year-old male was also wounded during the incident and remains hospitalized receiving treatment.
Following an investigation, Garland Police located and arrested the suspected shooter, Reng Thlang Padom, 17, in neighboring Richardson on August 25 at approximately 7:30 PM.
Legal Charges and Custody
Charges: First-Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
Bail: Set at $1,000,000 for the murder charge and $500,000 for aggravated assault (Total: $1,500,000).
Custody: Held at the Garland Detention Center.
Detectives report that two distinct groups met at Watson Park prior to the gunfire. The motive behind the gathering and the exact cause of the altercation remain under active investigation.
A memorial vigil for Tonyvan Mang was held on August 28 at Calvary Chin Baptist Church in Garland, followed by funeral services and burial on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
