NEWARK, N.J. — UFC Flyweight Champion Joshua Van delivered a dramatic championship performance at UFC 328, defeating previously unbeaten contender Tatsuro Taira in a thrilling five-round battle already being called an early “Fight of the Year” contender by analysts and fans.
Known as “The Fearless,” Van overcame intense early grappling pressure before taking control late in the fight, ultimately securing a fifth-round TKO victory at the Prudential Center.
Early Grappling Pressure from Taira
The opening rounds belonged largely to Taira, whose elite wrestling and submission game created immediate problems for the champion. Over the course of the bout, Taira successfully completed 8 of 21 takedown attempts and accumulated more than seven minutes of control time, forcing Van to defend constantly on the ground during the first half of the fight.
Despite the pressure, Van remained composed and continued to conserve energy while adjusting to the challenger’s pace and timing.
Momentum Shift in Championship Rounds
Beginning in the third round, Van’s conditioning and tactical adjustments became the difference. Following instructions from his corner to target Taira’s body, the champion dramatically increased his striking output and began landing sharp combinations at range.
Van’s cardio and takedown defense steadily wore down the challenger as the momentum shifted toward the defending champion in rounds three and four.
Devastating Finish in Round Five
The fight reached its climax early in the fifth round when Van stunned Taira with a crushing front kick to the body followed by a barrage of unanswered punches. Taira was dropped multiple times before the referee stepped in at 1:32 of Round 5, handing the Japanese contender the first stoppage loss of his professional career.

Fight of the Night Honors
Following the bout, both fighters received $100,000 Fight of the Night bonuses for their unforgettable performance.
The victory also helped silence critics who questioned Van’s championship legitimacy after he originally captured the title following an injury stoppage against former champion Alexandre Pantoja. By defeating an undefeated contender in dominant fashion, Van strengthened his position as one of the UFC’s premier flyweights.
Pantoja Rematch Expected
With the successful title defense complete, speculation has already turned toward a potential rematch between Joshua Van and former champion Alexandre Pantoja, a matchup many expect UFC officials to pursue next.
